Abstract Expressionist Painting
Collage and Ink Drawings
Painting is an experience that brings me joyfully into the present moment as I focus on color, movement, and balance. Engaged in the process of watching what unfolds before my eyes, I’m never sure what will emerge. I take delight in watching colors interact as they seem to dance on the canvas.
I began painting shortly after graduating from college when I moved to San Francisco to study Tai Chi. At that time, I pursued studies in art, dance, mime, singing, and creative writing.
Carol Joy and June Steingart were among my first teachers with whom I studied color and design, oil painting, and drawing in Oakland. Later I moved to San Francisco and studied watercolor and charcoal/figure drawing at the De Young Museum Art School with John Di Paolo. Other teachers and mediums over the years include collage with Mitzi Trachtenberg and acrylics and collage with Todd Brown of the Red Poppy Art House. As a former painter at the 4th Street Studio and Gallery, I drew much inspiration from all my fellow painters. I feel the several decades of the practice of tai chi informs my paintings with a sense of energy, balance and flow.
My art has appeared in many venues in the Bay Area, including galleries, restaurants, cafes, an outdoor mural, painted furniture shown on TV, several paintings featured in the recently released film, “Bebop” and an installation at Burning Man 2007 “Temple of Dreams.”
